Weekly reflections on farm life, lawyer stress research, and mindfulness for relationships and wellbeing with Paulo Karat.
So I’ve never written a blog before and I don’t know what I’m doing. As seems to be a habit for me in life, I’ve not let a minor detail like that stop me from trying something new… I needed an idea to hang a blog on, to keep it short and precious for your time. Applying mindfulness for relationships and wellbeing starts with being present, so each week I’ll share unfiltered reflections across core areas of my life.
The Farm: Roseland Farm is magical, fun, and often bonkers (escaped goats, potholing works before work!). My Oxford education and Master’s degrees didn’t prepare me for filling potholes in a sweaty t-shirt, but life’s paths are rarely straight lines.
Academia: Facilitating a focus group on psychological distress in lawyers in Nottingham. The key takeaway? If you treat people as human beings first and profit centres second, create safety for honesty, people stay well and don’t burn out.
Therapy: Clients teach me so much about human fragility and resilience. The universal need for authentic human connection outweighs any financial or professional ‘success’.
Mindfulness
Teaching a 6-week course to 18 colleagues at work. What resonated most was my regret about family meals after my breakdown—being present in body, but distracted in mind on autopilot. How many moments do we miss when we aren’t present?
Relationships
When navigating a tough challenge with someone we love this week, my body told me I had to speak up. How do you say hard things while ensuring the bond stays strong? Start and end with the most important message: “We love you.”
Be well everyone,
Paulo Karat
